The Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis suggests that the language we use shapes our reality. I think the language we receive from others also shapes our reality, and your article is a great example of this. The words we use internally to ourselves and externally to each other sculpt our world. Thank you for the reminder to be mindful and encouraging with my words.
Thanks so much for the insight. Always great to have a psychologist providing the "words" for what I'm thinking and feeling! And, it means I'll be even more careful with what I say as well. :)
Beautifully written and a great reminder to be intentional with our words. I too have felt the shock and overwhelming warmth of being reminded of how empowering something I said to someone was and often I can barely remember having said it! So too has the impact of negativity so we must choose wisely!
Random words and acts of kindness (and hurt) power so much of our lives -- thanks for that reminder. I spent a delightful hour today having coffee with one of my city councilors, who I met at a conference a couple of weeks ago after I walked over to her table to introduce myself, congratulate her on her re-election and thank her for her service. It boosted ME on a day I needed a boost to see her gracious and heartfelt reaction. Why don't I do more of that when it's so easy, knowing my whole career trajectory was launched by a positive one-sentence note on a paper I received back from a revered college professor? As always, thank you for bringing thoughtfulness to the forefront of my day :)
Wow! A really important and lovely reminder of the influence and responsibility we each have with our words. Also, didn’t realize you ran the Boston marathon - damn, that’s badass!!
Such a beautiful post. And there have been words that you have said to me, that have meant more than I can say. I will tell you about them later, in private, but know that you too are making ripples in people's lives.

Wow! Kudos for you for reaching out to the councilor, which is a reminder to ME about making an effort to arrange encounters like that. Thank you.

Laura -- Thank YOU. How kind of you, and actually -- it's mutual. This Thanksgiving holiday -- I give thanks for our friendship.
